Prime Small Screen Picks: Seven Must-Watch Films This Coming Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching commentary addresses the tyranny of women's appearance as well as the dreaded aspects of advancing years. Demi Moore presents a brilliant portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, an aging celebrity forced into starring in a fitness program on the small screen. Forced aside due to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out a mysterious and gruesome process known as "The Substance". This produces a younger clone named Sue, leading to a steadily more vampiric relationship between the two. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery stars Keira Knightley playing Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a break from reporting on international wars to join an opulent ship alongside an ailing wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her partner, plus additional extremely wealthy passengers. However when a mysterious woman goes overboard during the evening and all passengers denies she ever existed, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Available now, on Netflix

Presence

Steven Soderbergh tests his directorial skills in this nifty ghostly tale filmed completely from the viewpoint of the phantom. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their fresh home, the camera – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the ghostly being, and it looks like defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame in this meta comedy caper. He acts as an egotistical celebrity named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to attend a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for billionaire superfan Javi. Hired by the CIA to gather intel on the potential kingpin, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong despite the lack of a sequel. Set in 1978 Denver, several disappearances has made the children on edge. After Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. But the old telephone in the room keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for greed in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple commence capitalizing on the people's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, yet the lead actress achieves to present the character in a likable light. October 14th, late night, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This week's second offering by the same director delivers a spy mystery as sharp as the polo necks sported by the actor's British agent. He receives a mission to discover a double agent within their ranks from a group of five – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are masters of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging mental battle of truth or lie unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, the Sky channel
