Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
