Roughly 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state initial examinations indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are presently not cognizant of any harm in association with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.
A senior political figure commented the incident rendered him without words and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
